Because of the successful growth of the tournament over the past several years, Blue Ridge Literacy added a second daytime tournament event. This year, for the first time, Scrabblers gathered at a lunchtime competition!
The daytime event began at noon, with lunch and social time together, and the tournament play began at 12:45. The evening event began with supper at 5:00, and the competition kicked off at 6:00. Area restaurants provided platters of donated food and our tutors baked lots of home baked goodies for dessert. Maggie Moo’s came at the break and the ice cream was a hit.
Both events were held in the Fitzpatrick Hall at the Jefferson Center.
All competition is team-based, with three players per team. Play is timed to make sure everyone gets every chance to be involved. Last year’s event had 50 teams, with over 200 players, spectators, and supporters attending.
Besides the board game play, teams and players are also recognized for most creative name, best word played, team spirit, and more. The competition is open to teams with players having all levels of ability.
The focus of the events, while the competition is fierce, is on fun and fellowship, and raising awareness of and support for the work of Literacy.
All proceeds from the event go to the work done by Blue Ridge Literacy, teaching adults throughout the Blue Ridge region English literacy skills.
Stay tuned for our 8th annual Scrabble tournament in March 2013!
