Famed poetess Nikki Giovanni spoke on behalf of literacy at the Blue Ridge Literacy announcement event. As part of the roll-out of our new name and new look, Blue Ridge Literacy hosted acclaimed poet and Virginia Tech professor Nikki Giovanni at a special January 2012 event at the new South Roanoke County library. Close to 70 persons were in attendance including library patrons, BRL board, staff and tutors and volunteers. Giovanni read her poetry and pledged her support of adult literacy.
