ESOL Classes
ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Classes are available for non-native English speakers. All classes take place at Blue Ridge Literacy in Downtown Roanoke. We offer five levels of English classes (Pre-Beginner, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Post-Advanced), as well as specialized classes throughout the year. Learners are placed in a program based on their preferences, schedule, and English proficiency level. Call 540-265-9339 to schedule a registration appointment. Spring Semester: January 4, 2024 - April 16, 2024
Summer Semester: May 2, 2024 - August 15, 2024
Fall Semester: September 5, 2024 - December 19, 2024
In-person classes (at BRL office): Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Remote classes (online): Tuesday and Thursday 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost?
There is a one-time $30 registration fee. A re-enrollment fee after the first session of ESOL classes is $10 per session.
What level of English class will I attend?
All BRL learners take a reading test after enrolling at BRL. Based on this score, you will be placed in the appropriate level of class.
Do you have class on the weekends?
We do not have classes on the weekends. If you are only able to study on the weekends, please see information about our tutoring program
Where are English classes?
Classes take place in the BRL offices located in the Main Library in Downtown Roanoke.
What will I learn in classes or tutoring?
BRL offers comprehensive English language instruction that focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

BRL is located at 706 South Jefferson Street. We are inside the Main Library (beside Social Security Administration)
What time is class?
Class times vary. Our ESOL classes are 10:00 am - 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm on Tuesday and Thursday.
How quickly will I learn at BRL?
BRL learners typically improve their reading skills by one literacy level after 40 hours of instruction.
